Derfla young wines

In November we invite you to join us in the cellars for the young wines. The kind the winemakers taste right there in the cellar, the kind an ordinary wine lover rarely gets to.

For us it is a break from the pre-Christmas rush. You slow down, sit among people, chat with the winemakers and taste the young wines at your own pace. We will gladly welcome you and pour you something from the youngest harvest.

Wine in the middle of becoming

Young wines are beautiful in their wildness and their changeability. They often carry a fizz after fermentation, and some are still fermenting the moment we pour them. They are unfiltered, sometimes cloudy, full of primary aromatics: the fruit and flower notes that come straight from the grape and are born in fermentation.

Common questions

What are young wines?
Young wines are this year’s harvest, during fermentation or shortly after. They are lively and fresh, with vivid primary aromatics. In some you will even feel a gentle fizz from the carbon dioxide left over from fermentation. You will find them only directly from the winemaker at the cellar, and in this fresh form only in this period.
Do you pour cloudy wines too?
Of course. Young wines are usually unfiltered and often cloudy. And it is precisely in their wildness, their boldness and freshness that they are even very interesting.
How does the entry fee and payment work?
The entry fee is 120 CZK on the day, always with an OIV glass. Poured samples are paid in cash directly to each winemaker, so bring some cash. At Vinařství Medek you can also pay by card for bottles and larger orders.
Is there somewhere to sit, and what about children and animal friends?
Yes, there is seating in the cellars, press houses and yards. The mood is family-friendly and neighbourly, and children are welcome. Your animal friends will enjoy the outdoor seating, but most cellars are off-limits to them.
Can I get a beer somewhere?
Definitely. Just nearby is our Derfla pub U Kovaříků.
What should I wear?
Cellars and yards are cool in November, so warm layers and comfortable shoes are a good idea. At Vinařství Medek you can warm up as well, they heat both the tent and the pergola in the garden.
Does it really end at 8 pm?
Eight in the evening is rough guidance. We will keep going as long as the fun and the wine keep flowing.
Where do I park?
Bear in mind you will be tasting, so leave the driving to a sober lift or companion. They can park at the church car park, just above Vinařství Medek. From there you can stroll between the cellars at your leisure.
Can I take wine home?
Yes. You can buy whole bottles straight from the winemakers on the spot. Or you can arrange a pickup with each winemaker on the Sunday, between 10 and 11 in the morning.
How is this different from the spring open cellars?
Yes, quite different. In spring you are in the gardens with a picnic basket, tasting finished wines, a celebration of the start of summer. In November you stay more in the cellar, among the barrels and demijohns, tasting only their promise: how the vintage is shaping up and how its wild beginnings taste. Autumn is an escape from the winter lull and the pre-Christmas rush. A different mood, the same winemakers.
