Our winemakers

The Magnificent Seven
from Uherské Hradiště

Each of us makes wine their own way. Some barely intervene, some raise their wine with a firm hand, some let it live a life of its own. Stop by for a glass.

Ivo Blahuš

Ivo Blahuš

Pod Vinohrady 285, Sady

Mapy.cz · Google Maps

Ivo keeps it simple: wine should bring joy, and everyone finds something they like. Drop by his lovely little cellar with its easy seating and taste what he's coaxed out of this year's young wines.

Pavel Sedlář

Pavel Sedlář

Solná cesta 265, Sady

Mapy.cz · Google Maps · street view

Pavel is a modest perfectionist. You won't find a single dried drip in his cellar, and the same care comes through in his off-dry and semi-sweet wines. At the open cellars the whole family pours for you. There is a lovely pool in the garden, and rumour has it guests have been offered a dip. How much of that is true, we couldn't say.

Alois Zatloukal

Alois Zatloukal

Železniční 235, Sady

Mapy.cz · Google Maps

Alois is headstrong and stubborn, and with wine that means he does everything his own way. He keeps to the old country method, barely intervenes, and lets the wine live its own life as long as possible, with no added sulphur. The result is honest wine that pretends to be nothing it isn't. Guests love sitting in Alois's garden, with a huge cherry tree in the middle.

Ondřej Balíček

Ondřej Balíček

Vřesová 74, Sady

Mapy.cz · Google Maps

Ondra stands out because he makes low-intervention wine even without a cellar. Just ask him, he is happy to tell the story and show you around. In the vineyard he happily leaves the grapes hanging until the first snow, so among the specialities you will find selection, ice and straw wines. He ferments on wild yeasts and lets the wines age on the lees for a full year if need be.

Bečica & Juračka

Tomáš and Mirek. They made their first wine in 2000, just the two of them in a single demijohn, with no family tradition behind them. After more than twenty years they pride themselves on clean wines with no technical faults. With the reds they go uncompromisingly for malolactic fermentation and barrel ageing, because 'a red deserves a barrel'.

Hron & spol.

Hron & spol.

Na Kopci 42, Sady

Mapy.cz · Google Maps

The Hron brothers make wine in the oldest and also the largest of the open cellars. They shine with the reds, and watch out, don't slip and say 'Rulanda', here they pour only 'Burgunda' or 'Pinot'! Above the cellar there's a wonderful spot in the garden among the vines, perfect for a picnic.

Vinařství Medek

Vinařství Medek

Na Kopci 68, Sady

Josef fell in love with winemaking, and with Jarmila. The trouble was, a single glass of ordinary wine would leave her with a headache for a week, so he started making his wines unfiltered, alive and nearly sulphur-free. Today it works like this: Josef tends his wines and barrel-aged specials in the cellar, and Jarmila runs the winery and its legendary home cooking. Son-in-law Jaromír, mad about flavours, aromas and pairing wine with food, loves teaching anyone with an interest in wine, in English too. At Vinařství Medek they reckon you should feel good not just with the wine, but the day after.

Derfla events

Our big three

We organise three main events a year, the kind we would want to go to ourselves.

Common questions

Before you come
What events do you run, and where?
Three a year, all in and around Sady. The Derfla open cellars in spring and the young wines in autumn, both right in Sady, a district of Uherské Hradiště (in maps, search for Sady, Uherské Hradiště). The wine tent stands in September at the Moravian Slovakia Festival of Wine and Open Monuments in the city centre, on Masarykovo náměstí. Details, prices and times are on each event.
Will I get by in English or German?
Our main events run mostly in Czech, and you will get by in English reliably at Vinařství Medek. And do not worry: the more we taste together, the better we understand each other.
How do I get there?
Sady is a short hop from the centre of Uherské Hradiště, reachable by car, bike or bus. In town you can also grab a Nextbike shared bike, the first 15 minutes free, which is plenty to reach us from the centre. You will find the address, map and directions in the Find us section. The winemakers are all within about a kilometre, so you simply stroll between the cellars on foot.
